New virtual design laboratory at the BME Department of Machine and Product Design with the sponsorship of Knorr-Bremse Hungária.
On the 4th June, 2014 a new virtual design lab was opened at the Department of Machine and Product Design of Budapest University of Technology and Economics. The laboratory was realized with the aid of a 10 million forint financial support of Knorr-Bremse Vasúti Jármű Rendszerek Hungária Kft.
The laboratory with the capacity of 12 students and the available tools lining up the cutting-edge technologies are to be used by students to acquire the knowledge and skills of the special areas of modern engineering design. In the new unit an important role is given to the tools and usage of the 3D scanning and designing, and also to the virtual and extended reality technologies. The 3D capable full HD displays and the Leonar3Do tools (they are actually Hungarian developments) connected to them are of great help to the students and researchers. The system enables them to scan objects in 3D, furthermore to change, manipulate, and also redesign them, eventually by all this putting the product development process into a higher spheres. Primarily, the laboratory and the advanced design tools will be used by the students involved in the mechanical engineering and industrial design engineering programs, especially in the frame of a course named “Virtual product development”, but also it provides assistance in running semester projects and diploma projects, as well as research projects.
