The Budapest University of Technology and Economics has been in good positions in international (global and European) ranking of higher educational organizations. These rankings, although not always the most reliable indicators, but make comparison with the best known institutions in the world using some benchmarks and methodologies.
Different rankings are made using special methods and different databases. For example scientific recognition is measured by the number of Nobel laureates, Fields Medals, by data of publications (Web of Science, Scopus citations) number of institutional patents (WIPO, Patstat), taking account institutional data gathered from the universities themselves (data on faculty staff, students, etc.)
The major service providers compile world rankings, but there are regional or field specific lists in increasing number. The table below summarizes BME's results while give a survey of world rankings that do not contain BME yet. From regional and fields specific rankings only those are indicated which ranked BME, too.

About rankings
One of the most important ranking, Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) or Shanghai ranking is compiled by Chiao Tung University and is published in every August. In its evaluation the number of former or active Nobel laureates and Fields Medal owners are taken into account. BME was ranked there 404th—502nd in 2014.
The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) is the only global service that evaluates institutes without targeted data gathering or sending questionnaires to the universities, but evaluating the publications' data and the quality of education, that is measured by employment data of graduated students.
Eduniversal compiles the top list of master and MBA programmes annually. The survey analyses course offers if institutions from 154 countries in 30 fields of education.
Centrum voor Wetenschap en Technologische Studies (CWTS) in the Netherlands publishes Leiden Ranking, one of the well known world ranking in every year. Its results are calculated only from bibliographic data using Web of Science data. Leiden Ranking containing 500 top universities was first published in 2007. In 2014 it ranked 750 universities including BME at the 561st position.
The successor of Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan (HEEACT) ranking the National Taiwan University Ranking (NTU) has been published since 2010 under this title.
The British Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) had been published their ranking jointly with THE until 2009. Since then they publish ranking alone. Their calculations are based on publications data of Scopus database. QS publishes field specific and regional lists showing BME's position regularly.
The Spanish SCImago Research Groups SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) is one of the lists that cover research institutes and higher education institutes together.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE) is a world ranking compiled by weekly THE. Since the breakup with QS in 2009, THE uses Thomson Reuters data for Elsevier, so it's often referred as Thomson Reuters World University Rankings. Since 2015 THE uses Elsevier's Scopus database for bibliographic information.
U-Multirank (UMR), initiated by the European Commission was published first in 2014. The profile of BME is included in the database describing 850 institutions. The service is not a traditional linear ranking, but coefficients that may determine the competitiveness of the unique higher education institutions.
The University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) has been published by the Middle East Technical University (Ankara, Turkey) since 2009. Besides world ranking it publishes regional and field specific rankings as well, where the performance of BME was quite good. URAP's Field Based Ranking has been using a more detailed classification of scientific fields since 2014.
The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is a Spanish initiative. Since 2004 and every six months an independent, objective, free, open scientific exercise is performed by the Cybermetrics Lab (Spanish National Research Council, CSIC) for the providing reliable, multidimensional, updated and useful information about the performance of universities from all over the world based on their web presence and impact.
Hungary
The most famous domestic higher education ranking is published by HVG Diploma special edition in every November. Other publishers are also publishing /used to publish university rankings like Népszabadság or Heti Válasz. Domestic field specific rankings evaluate faculties instead of universities.
